Before the invention of insulin, type 1 diabetic (T1D) patients were advised to avoid sugar and starch (carbohydrate) and to eat a very low carb, ketogenic diet to control blood sugar. In contrast, modern advice is to eat carbohydrates and treat the resulting high blood sugar with large doses of insulin. This “eat carb and take more insulin” method increases the cost of diabetic care and does nothing to protect the patient from symptoms and complications. Worse, it exposes T1D patients to the real danger of a fatally low blood-sugar episode (hypoglycemia). The logical solution is to reduce both carb intake and insulin dosage. Avoiding carbs while enjoying foods rich in healthy fats and protein stabilizes blood sugar and reduces medication costs and the risk of long-term complications. The Ketogenic Diet for Type 1 Diabetes provides the tools and information you need to successfully take control of your diabetes. In addition to clear explanations of the science, you’ll find personal success stories, lists of the foods to eat and to avoid, cooking tips, how to get started and personalize the diet, adapting basal and bolus insulin doses, and special considerations for children with T1D.

As a treatment for diabetes, the current American Diabetes Association guidelines are a disaster for Type 1 diabetics. The ADA recommendations actually make blood sugar control much harder and increase the danger of hypoglycemic episodes. The Ketogenic Diet for Type 1 Diabetes eBook provides the practical information to implement a ketogenic diet in the context of managing insulin needs. Coauthored with Dr. Keith Runyan, a physician who treats his own type 1 diabetes with a ketogenic diet (with the result of an HbA1c of 5.0) the book contains over 300 pages of referenced, applicable information on getting off the blood sugar roller coaster, avoiding hypoglycemia, lowering HbA1c test results and avoiding diabetic complications.

Did you know that the ADA recommends a diet which makes long term diabetic complications more likely? The diet the American Diabetes Association recommends calls for 45-60 carbs per meal. As a result of that carb load, blood sugar spikes, insulin is administered, and blood sugar crashes. We call this the blood sugar roller coaster. The logical solution is to get off the blood sugar roller coaster completely. Following a low carb, high fat ketogenic diet stops this blood sugar spike/crash cycle, helps you reduce or even eliminate medications such as metformin, greatly reduce insulin needs, and avoid long-term diabetic complications.

This book is about my son's journey with type I diabetes and my own journey with aggressive breast cancer. It is about how I linked type I diabetes with epilepsy and how this helped me link cancer with epilepsy as well. I modified the traditional ketogenic diet used at Johns Hopkins Medical Center to treat epilepsy. I then used my own version of the diet to make my breast cancer tumor disappear in about two weeks. It is also about using my modified ketogenic diet for my son who is a type I diabetic, and him being able to eat without needing any insulin and without doing any calorie restrictions. This is my diet of hope -along with the research that comes from my heart- that I am sharing with you. "Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food." Hippocrates

It is possible to manage and even reverse diabetes through natural means, and in Reversing Diabetes, Dr. Colbert shows you how. Most people view diabetes as a dead-end street. Once you receive a diabetes diagnosis, your only option is to manage the symptoms with a restricted diet, close monitoring of blood sugar, and expensive medications. Dr. Colbert shows that diabetes can be treated instead through safe, natural means, like healthy food and vitamins rather than strictly relying on prescription drugs. He shows you how to manage your weight and your glucose intake with a whole-body approach, using nutritional supplements along with dietary and lifestyle changes to lose weight, repair cell damage, improve insulin function, and reduce the side effects from prescription drugs, many of which rob nutrients from the body and cause additional symptoms. Based on the same life-changing principles of the low-glycemic, high-fiber eating plan provided in Dr. Colbert’s New York Times best-selling book, Dr. Colbert’s “I Can Do This” Diet, this book adapts that plan in a way that makes it ideal for diabetics who need to manage their glucose levels and their weight. “Siloam, an imprint of Charisma House Book Group, is the leader in the Christian health and fitness genre, with several best-sellers...including Don Colbert's The Bible Cure series.” --Christian Retailing “Physician Don Colbert Preaches The Gospel Of Good Nutrition, Advising His Patients To Follow In The Footsteps Of One Of History's Better-known Role Models.” --Orlando Sentinel

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1903 edition. Excerpt: ... SECTION XL DISEASES OF THE MUSCLES. I. MYOSITIS. Definition.--Inflammation of the voluntary muscles. A primary myositis occurs as an acute or subacute affection, and is probably dependent on some unknown infectious agent. Several characteristic cases have been described of late years. That of E. Wagner may be taken as a typical example. A tuberculous but well-built woman entered the hospital, complaining of stiffness in the shoulders and a slight oedema of the back of the hands and forearms. There was paresthesia, the arms became swollen, the skin tense, and the muscles felt doughy. Gradually the thighs became affected. The disease lasted about three months. The post mortem showed slight pulmonary tuberculosis; all the muscles except the glutei, the calf, and abdominal muscles were stiff and firm, but fragile, and there were serous infiltration, great proliferation of the interstitial tissue, and fatty degeneration. Similar cases have been reported by Unverricht, Hepp, and Jacoby, of New York. In the case reported by Jacoby the muscles were firm, hard, and tender, and there was slight oedema of the skin--dermato-myositis. The cases usually last from one to three months, though there are instances in which it has been longer. The swelling and tenderness of the muscles, the oedema, and the pain naturally suggest trichinosis, and indeed Hcpp speaks of it as a pseudo-trichinosis. The nature of the disease is unknown. Senator's case presented marked disorders of sensation, and there is a question whether the peripheral nerves are not involved with the muscles. Wagner suggests that some of these cases were examples of acute progressive muscular atrophy. The separation from trichinosis can be made only by removing a portion of the muscle. It...
